Thoughts on How Not to Age: The Scientific Approach to Getting Healthier as You Get Older by Michael Greger, M.D., FACLM

How Not to Age: The Scientific Approach to Getting Healthier as You Get Older by Michael Greger, M.D., FACLM is a very long book. I read it out of curiosity about where Dr. Greger was going with it. How Not to Age took me months to read but also included a couple of pauses in reading due to a trip and personal circumstances. I reviewed How Not to Age on Reviews with TLC.

I first became acquainted with Dr. Greger by watching his videos on nutritionfacts.org. I liked that he explained complex research in easy to digest segments that made sense and that he injected a bit of humor into his presentations of very serious analysis of the research around nutrition. I have read several of his books, own a couple of his cookbooks, and use the Daily Dozen app whenever I feel like I'm slacking off on my nutritional needs.

I have discussed some of Dr. Greger's other books and website before because they have been instrumental in my journey to eat a healthy, whole food plant-based diet. As in his other books, Dr. Greger continues to make the research accessible while debunking flawed research and shining a spotlight on potential biases and misrepresentations of media coverage of research in How Not to Age. He provides tips and ideas for incorporating helpful findings into one's life with relative ease.

How Not to Age explores research into multiple facets of aging. Dr. Greger looks at the health benefits of the various recommendations made by research. He debunks some things, is neutral on others, and promotes yet others.

I already incorporate many of his recommendations as those are the same ones that he recommended in his other books and on his website. Distilled down, a plant-based diet appears to be the best bet for maintaining good health throughout the aging process. I will also likely add a few other things into my recipes where appropriate. All that said, there are some things that I just flat out didn't find applicable to my life, but others might. Of course, the things I didn't find applicable others might. It's all about learning, thinking critically, and incorporating what works for each of us.

While How Not to Age was a good book, I think his first book How Not to Die (this links to the first version. Apparently, a new version is coming out in December 2025.) was probably the best for exploring the nutritional aspects of a plant-based diet from a foundational aspect.

It's important to read books, watch videos, read articles, and explore cookbooks from a variety of sources in order to find the most nutritious options that also fit individual needs.

Healthy can taste good!!
